3 Tips On How To Kickstart Your Marketing In Your Business
Are you a small business owner that is struggling with marketing? You have this amazing product that basically sells itself and sofar you are just not sure what steps to take to grow your business to the next level, then this article is for you.
Have you ever thought about what makes big brands successful at marketing? Yes sure, having a big budget does help, but remember one thing… big brands had to start somewhere, they were not always a “big brand”.
Google started out of a small messy garage, and so did Hewlett-Packard and Steve Jobs started Apple from his parents home in California.
Maybe you think that you don’t care about becoming a big brand… You are happy to be a small business owner, and that is perfectly OK. But one thing is for sure, as a small business owner with a tight budget, you need to stand out to generate leads that turn into customers or you will be swallowed by big companies in today’s digital world.
Did you know that there are 1.93 billion users everyday on facebook, 500 million on instagram daily, over 500 hours of YouTube video gets uploaded every minute, and on average around 6,000 tweets are tweeted every second! Crazy right?! That is the reality of having a business in the digital age. Pretty overwhelming I reckon.
So how exactly do you stand out in a world where you have literally ONLY 3 SECONDS to grab someone's attention?
As a marketing geek and having 10+ years of marketing experience behind me, and helping my clients with very tight budgets triple their sales.
I thought it is about time I share my Top 3 Marketing Tips that helped them and also will help you as a small business owner in 2022.
Identify your ideal client. ALL successful businesses are client centric. What does that mean? Exactly what the name says - a business centred around clients. When we take on a new agency client, the very first thing we do is to identify their customer avatar, also known as customer persona. Why? Because this is the backbone of your business. As a human you need your bones, it is the ‘structural frame’ of your body. Without bones you will die. Dramatic I know, but that is how serious it is to know and understand your avatar. It is the structural frame of your marketing. Understanding their desires, pain points, struggles and so on but most importantly how can your business fix it for them. I put together a mini course and blueprint that we use for our customers that you can access here: https://www.avatarknowledgeblueprint.com/
Have you heard of the concept “Hooking In Your Customer”. If not, you might be thinking, what the heck I am talking about. In 2020 Brendan Kane released a book called Hook Point. It is seriously one of the best marketing books I’ve ever read. In his book, Brendan refers to how you only have 3 seconds to ‘hook’ a potential customer into your business. As mentioned in the beginning of this article you are competing with thousands of people. How do you create hooks? Hooks are headlines, pictures, memes etc. It is that “something” that makes your ideal client stop in their tracks. You stopped to read this article? Think of why you did that? I hooked you in with the headline…
Grow your email list. And no… email is not “kapoet”. Companies don’t get bought for high dollar values by looking pretty or having a great brand. They get bought for the size of their client list. Do you think Microsoft bought Skype for 8.5 billion dollars because they had a need for a communications software? Most definitely not. They could easily afford to build it themselves and probably had the resources already at hand. When they bought Skype, Skype had around 330 million active users each month, typically with around 40 million online at any one moment.
The key to growing your company is to grow your customer list. You already know this. But a lot of small businesses miss this very crucial part of the structural marketing frame. Let me be weird and call it your femur, tibia and fibula. Whatever bone you reckon is the most important bone in your body so you don’t forget how important it is to have a lead magnet. That is how you build your list - a Lead Magnet.
You need to exchange something for an email address or even an email address and a phone number. For example, if your ideal client is a homegrown vegetable grower and you dived into understanding their desires you could create an ebook or mini course for free based on their desires and struggles. It could be about what veggies to plant in what season, or how to get rid of pesky plant bugs or the secrets of growing really yummy veggies.
Again refer to point 1, know and understand your customer, and then hook them in like in point 2. See how this all works together as a beautiful marketing ecosystem?
